Our Process

Site Preparation and Laying

Site Preparation
Preparation is the key to establishing a magnificent lawn.  The following steps must be taken to ensure this is achieved.

Soil Testing
A soil test is recommended prior to commencing all works.  This will cost approximately $100 and the results are usually available within 7 days.  We can assist with advice on sampling and assessing soil test results.

Weed Control
Weed control is very important in the preparation process.  We recommend spraying weeds and any existing lawn with Glyphosate at least 7 days before laying your new turf.  For harder to control weeds such as Couch, Kikuyu, Nutgrass and Khaki weed, Deadnettle, Paspalum and Wire weed,  it is critical to control/eradicate the weed before your new turf is laid.  In this situation it is advisable to contact us to discuss your options with a qualified agronomist, before using any herbicides.  Bendygleet Turf Farm can provide a plan to manage hard to control weeds, and can supply a full of range of herbicides - both knock-down and residual herbicides - to ensure that your new lawn stays weed free.

Clearing
Clear the area removing all rocks, debris, dead lawn and weeds.

Soil Amendments
The aim of soil preparation is to improve the structure of your current soil profile (if required), improve soil aeration and drainage.  We recommend rotary hoeing if the existing soil is suitable, or by addition of a turf underlay of good quality, weed free top soil (or organic based blend) which can be purchased from your local landscape supplier.  Should you have a heavy clay soil, it is advisable to use a soil amendment such as Gypsum.  Gypsum improves and conditions soil structure of heavy clay soils – it should be applied at 1kg per metre square.  Bendygleet Turf Farm supply a full range of soil amendments to ensure your soil structure and nutrition is ideal before you turf .

Measuring
If the shape of the area to be turfed is close to rectangular or square, measure your area length X width.  If you have an unusually shaped area, another option is to measure the area using a hand help GPS.   We can help you to measure your area using a GPS.

Underlay
The final height of your soil or underlay should be at least 3cm below pathways or driveways.
To avoid drainage problems, ensure soil gradients slope away from housing foundations or pathways – if required, add a quality turf underlay to raise the level as necessary.

Starter Fertilisers
Using a starter fertilizer before the new turf is laid is recommended.  Applying a starter fertilizer will ensure the turf roots are established quickly into the new soil which reduces the initial period of watering at establishment.  Bendygleet Turf Farm supplies a full range of slow release turf fertilizers to ensure that your new lawn stays healthy.  Click here to contact us.

Water Crystals
Water crystals can be applied before the turf is laid.  Using water crystals will significantly reduce the water requirements of your new lawn during establishment and once established.

Turf Laying

Turf Laying
Commence laying your turf along a long straight edge such as a boundary or a driveway.   Lay the turf in a staggered pattern (similar pattern to bricklaying).

When turfing around unusual shapes or obstacles use a sharp knife or spade to cut the turf to fit the area.

Rolling
Rolling the turf with a landscape roller is recommended. Landscape rollers can be hired for $20/day from Bendygleet Turf Farm.  When rolling the turf, the aim is to ensure the turf has good soil contact and this will enable better uptake of water and nutrients.

Overlay
A light top soil application (use the remaining underlay) or sand (weed free) may be applied to fill joins and level any depressions – ensure the leaf of the turf is visible.

Watering
Water your turf immediately after laying (within 30minutes), soaking to a depth of at least 10cm.  In hot weather several light waterings per day may be needed.  Alternatively, cover the turf with a 30% shade cloth to keep it moist.  Turf should be watered generously for 12-14 days to encourage root establishment.
